Minimum Viable Pig Setup: What You Actually Need vs What You Think You Need

The biggest barrier to starting pig farming is not the cost — it is the misconception of what you need. Beginners see photos of commercial pig farms with concrete buildings, automatic waterers, imported breeds, and think they need the same setup. They do not. In fact, starting with an elaborate setup is the fastest way to fail, because you spend all your capital on infrastructure and none on feed and pigs [1][2][3].

This article compares what beginners THINK they need with what they ACTUALLY need, with prices for each item.

The "I think I need" list vs the "I actually need" list

ItemWhat beginners think they needWhat they actually needSavings

The beginner who thinks they need 1,470,000 FCFA to start never starts — the amount is too intimidating. The beginner who knows they need 220,000 FCFA starts next week.

Why the simple setup works (and the elaborate one fails)

The concrete house is unnecessary for 3 pigs. A raised wooden platform keeps pigs dry, well-ventilated, and off the cold ground — all that matters for pig health. Concrete is only needed when you have 20+ pigs and the wooden platform cannot handle the weight. By the time you have 20 pigs, you will have the revenue to build concrete.

The automatic waterers are a nice-to-have, not a must-have. A cut tire inner tube bolted to the fence holds water just fine. The pigs do not care if the waterer is stainless steel or recycled rubber. The water quality matters more than the waterer material.

The purebred gilts are a trap for beginners. They cost 4-5x more than crossbred weaners, they require higher-quality feed, they are more susceptible to local diseases, and they die more easily from heat stress. Crossbred pigs (50% Large White x 50% Local) are hardier, eat local feed, and still produce 8-12 piglets per litter. You upgrade to purebreds when you have 5+ million FCFA and experience.

The all-commercial-feed diet is the #1 profit killer. Commercial feed is nutritionally complete but expensive (350-400 FCFA/kg). By mixing with forage, cassava peel (processed), kitchen waste, and crop residues, you bring the effective feed cost to ~200 FCFA/kg — a 43% savings on your biggest expense. The pigs grow slightly slower but your profit is dramatically higher.

What you should NOT skimp on

While you should save on infrastructure, there are 3 things you must NOT cut corners on:

  1. Dewormer (ivermectin): 1,500 FCFA per pig, saves 30,000 FCFA in wasted feed. Never skip.
  2. Iron injection (if breeding): 100 FCFA per piglet, prevents 15-20% mortality. Never skip.
  3. Records: A notebook costs 500 FCFA. Not tracking your costs and revenue is the most expensive mistake in farming. Use FarmWise (free) or a notebook.

The upgrade path: when to invest in better equipment

Start with the minimum viable setup. As your farm grows, upgrade in this order:

  • After 1st successful cycle (5-6 months): Buy a small chest freezer (150,000 FCFA) — lets you store and sell pork at premium prices.
  • After 2nd cycle (12 months): Build a second pen (60,000 FCFA) — allows batch separation and all-in, all-out management.
  • After 1 year of profit: Upgrade water system to nipple drinkers (35,000 FCFA) — saves labor and improves water hygiene.
  • After 2 years of profit: Build a concrete farrowing pen (150,000 FCFA) — needed when you have 5+ sows.
  • After 3 years of profit: Invest in a small feed mill (3,000,000 FCFA) — cuts feed cost by 25-35%.

Each upgrade is funded by profit from the previous cycle, not by borrowing. This is the path from 3-pig beginner to profitable pig farmer — and it starts with a wooden platform, a jerry can, and 3 crossbred weaners.
